In our long-term environmental design practice, we have come to recognize that the relationship among time, space, and people constitutes a cultural science worthy of systematic study. This article explores the cultural-scientific connotations and modern value of "the cultural science of spatiotemporal-human-environment," drawing on practical experience from the Huanyan Design Center in Yangxi County. It offers a systematic review from a cultural-scientific perspective, totaling approximately 3,000 words, for readers' reference.
The concept of Space-Time-Human-Environment Science is not凭空; it is rooted in the continuous observation and summary of the relationship between heaven and humanity in traditional Chinese culture. The ancients spoke of favorable timing, advantageous location, and human harmony—the coordination of these three elements represents a朴素 expression of this science. In modern contexts, we transform this traditional wisdom into a methodological system that can be compared, checked, and replicated, moving it beyond vague experiential impressions to become a well-founded framework for environmental analysis.
From a temporal perspective, each of the 12 traditional Chinese hours follows its own rhythm, and each of the 24 solar terms carries distinct characteristics. When daily routines and schedules align with these natural rhythms, people tend to achieve greater stability. In providing recommendations to clients, we first map out their daily schedules and key activities, then integrate spatial considerations to offer tailored advice. This integration of time is what sets Space-Time-Person-Environment studies apart from general environmental discussions.
From a spatial perspective, orientation, layout, natural lighting, and ventilation collectively determine a space's fundamental quality. The Bagua directional system provides a symbolic framework for describing spatial relationships, translating abstract directional concepts into a practical checklist. This approach shifts environmental analysis from subjective impressions to evidence-based assessment with clear guidelines. In practice, we systematically evaluate key areas in residential or commercial properties—checking light direction, circulation paths, and visual focal points—to ensure every adjustment is grounded in specific, verifiable criteria.
From a human perspective, people differ in birth dates, habits, and needs, so the same space holds different meanings for different individuals. Analyzing one's birth chart here helps us understand their unique rhythms, enabling environment recommendations tailored to each person rather than applying generic templates. This human-centered approach elevates Space-Time-Human-Environment studies beyond mere spatial aesthetics into the deeper realm of human-environment interaction.
In modern urban life, environmental challenges are growing increasingly complex. Selecting the orientation of high-rise residences, arranging workspaces in offices, and designing circulation paths in commercial venues all require a holistic consideration of temporal rhythms, spatial conditions, and user characteristics. Chronospatial-Human-Environment Science offers an integrated framework to help decision-makers make more confident choices among numerous options.
It is important to note that Spacetime Environmental Science provides guidance and recommendations, not guarantees of specific outcomes. We uphold scientific integrity and respect individual differences; all analytical conclusions should be interpreted rationally in light of actual circumstances. This reflects our consistent service philosophy. Environmental influence is gradual and holistic, shaping human experience through a sense of order, stability, and comfort—rather than through dramatic or immediate effects.
We also encourage customers to continue observing and recording after adjustments, sharing their feedback with us to create a virtuous cycle between practice and theory. As a growing cultural science, Spacetime-Human-Environment Studies continuously refines its framework through this very cycle. In today's era of rapid AI advancement, intelligent agent-based interactive interpretation offers a new platform for disseminating this discipline, enabling more people to easily access and apply these traditional insights.
In summary, the value of spatiotemporal human-environment studies lies in integrating time, space, and people within a single framework to provide rational and balanced guidance for environmental decision-making.
